The form is made from pressed & sized papier mache & then painted w/blk lacquer & gilding. The dec surfaces are lush & heavily populated w/multiple figs in various stations & performing a variety of activities. These include conversing in what appears to be an imperial palace, w/perhaps the Emperor & his queen w/their children, seen strolling about on verandas w/robes & parasols. On the back flange behind the slanted, open pocket, can be seen gold gilt illustrated artisans painting laid out scrolls on the floor & in front of a stretched canvas in a frame. Incredibly ornate & heavily decorated w/accomplished figuration. Very fine. Extraordinary.
